Movie Review: Quantum of Solace

October 31, 2008

movie posterLynne Connolly's movie review of "Quantum of Solace"

I went to the first night of "Quantum of Solace" tonight. A strange mix at the multiplex. You could tell pretty easily who was going to see "High School Musical 3" and who was there for Bond.

This is the first film review I've done, so I'll do it like I do books. A brief résumé without spoilers, and what I thought of it. And I get the totally delectable Daniel Craig as a picture here. That'll do me! Read more

REVIEW: His Secondhand Wife by Cheryl St.John

October 30, 2008

Book CoverShannon C.'s review of His Secondhand Wife by Cheryl St.John
Historical western romance published by Harlequin 1 Jul 05

I think it was Super Wendy that first told me about Cheryl St.John. I know that Sybil adores her, and after a run of particularly "meh" western romances, I picked this book off the TBR pile. Whoever recommended the book certainly didn't steer me wrong, and I'm going to be eagerly reading more of Ms. St.John's backlist as soon as possible. Read more

TGTBTU’s Harlequin Insider: October/November Edition

October 30, 2008

by Michelle Styles
The end of September and beginning of October has been taken up with doing workshops for the National Year of Reading, writing and helping my eldest navigate the shoals of applying to universities. Why oh why was it so much easier when I was a student? And why did I think going on holiday at this time of year was a good one -- Sorrento, Italy in case anyone is interested.

REVIEW: Any Given Doomsday by Lori Handeland

October 30, 2008

Book CoverLiviania's review of Any Given Doomsday (Phoenix Chronicles, Book 1) by Lori Handeland
Urban Fantasy released by St. Martin's 4 Nov 08

Former cop Elizabeth Phoenix receives information through flashes of information.  Unfortunately, it was one of these flashes that disgraced her and got her partner killed.  Now, her foster mother Ruthie has been murdered and her former lover/foster brother Jimmy Sanducci is accused.  It turns out Jimmy has power as well and now needs Liz to use hers.  He also needs her to get training from Sawyer, an old acquaintance whom Liz is extremely attracted to. I enjoyed my first exposure to Lori Handeland, her novella "Dead Man Dating" in Dates from Hell.  This one convinced me to continue picking up books with her name on them. Read more

REVIEW: Cry Sanctuary by Moira Rogers

October 29, 2008

Book CoverShannon C.'s review of Cry Sanctuary (Red Rock Pass, Book 1) by Moira Rogers
Paranormal romance eBook released by Samhain 21 Oct 08

Disclaimer: Moira Rogers and I are the kind of friends who send each other weird random emails all the time about nothing. This probably means I'm not qualified at all to review her first book with Samhain, but that has never actually stopped me before. And honestly, if she hadn't been my friend, I probably would have had the same reaction to her book. I think that, though her debut Samhain book isn't perfect, she is definitely an author to watch, especially if you enjoy well-written paranormals.  Read more

REVIEW: Spectre by Phaedra Weldon

October 29, 2008

Book CoverGwen's review of Spectre (Zoë Martinique, Book 2) by Phaedra Weldon
Contemporary urban fantasy released by Ace Trade 3 Jun 08

Attention authors! If you're going to do first person, you may as well go all out and make it a conversation between the reader and your main character. Get personal, colloquial, and current.  I normally read first person POV with a very "hairy eyeball" (tm, Zoë Martinique) but Spectre won me over.  I felt like the character was sitting in the room telling me her story.  (Side note: Can anyone tell me why urban fantasies all seem to be first person POV?  Saintcrow, Harrison, Liu, etc., etc.  What's up with that?)  Read more
