Book CoverGwen’s review of Damien (The Nightwalkers, Book 4) by Jacquelyn Frank
Paranormal romance released by Zebra 27 May 08

This fourth book of Frank’s Nightwalkers series is consistent with the rest. I liked Elijah more, but this one, Jacob, and Gideon were on par with each other. Fun, interesting reads, but nothing spectacular. Read on to find out what appears to be getting better with Frank’s writing…

Remember how in my review of Elijah I basically skewered the author’s tendency to drive a point home, then up the driveway, into the garage, and into bed, rather than just leaving it at the curb for the reader to interpret? This tendency appears to have actually improved in Damien. There’s still a bit more prose than necessarily required but I never felt put-upon like I have in the other three books. I was very pleased to see that, and so was my patience.

What I wasn’t so crazy about with Damien was I never really liked the hero. Never really felt a kinship with the heroine. The villains continue to be good and the action interesting – two of my favorite elements of Frank’s books. Where things fail for me in the Nightwalkers books is the emotional tension and personality conflicts between characters (or the lack thereof). I want more meat/conflict for my characters and I don’t really get that from Frank’s books.

There are some revelations about the Nightwalker races and intermarrying that were interesting. My only question is, if these revelations were known once and lost to history on purpose, perhaps that was done for a reason. This fact appears to be lost on our intrepid heroes and heroines, however.

I can recommend this to anyone who is following the series – if you’ve liked the past novels, you’ll like this one and the reverse is true too. There’s nothing special about this entry. I don’t recommend starting with this book if you’re new to the series.
