Lisa Valdez Speaks… sort of

February 19, 2008

daffy.jpgLook an update!

Shocking I tells ya, I mean... who know?

Sorry this is what happens when they leave me alone and go off to bed and such. I have to say regardless of the feeling some may have taken away from my smartassness, I wish Lisa Valdez the best of luck in finishing her book.

I personally am glad to see her take a step, small as it may be, in the right direction.

So, I guess Patience isn't coming out this May?
    Ho hum.

  2. Katie on February 20th, 2008 11:41 am

This is totally ridiculous. No date for May, meaning Wendy's information haven't been updated yet, hmm? I know it may take ages to write something, I had my own problems with my master's thesis, what I don't like however are those wrong promises. They let me feel betrayed.

I've just stopped obsessing about this one. If/when it comes out I'll read it, but in the meantime, there are other books to read and authors to support, though I certainly wish Ms Valdez the best. I assume this means these books won't see the light of day until 2009 . . .

HAH! No fake publication dates for you anymore!

Bad bad bad *shakes finger with a that will teach them look*

Not to stir the pot, but I thought I'd chime in with a little bit about the publishing process. If Ms Valdez hasn't finished the book, then no, it probably won't be out for another year. Generally, when you turn in a book, it's within a 10-15 month period of it's release. For example, I turned in a book in Feb that is probably going to be out in Feb of next year. Once a book is turned in, the editor has to read it, edit and return it. Then we have to make changes. Then it goes to copy edits and then back to me. Then you eventually get the galley pages and you have to proof those as well. All of that takes up a lot of time as you can imagine. Then, there's other stuff like trying to schedule the book and do the cover art thing...

Anyway, I don't want to pee on any hopes, but in my humble opinion, I wouldn't expect her next book in 2008.

I doubt we'll see it till the end of 2009.

What about contractual obligations? Aren't authors usually under deadline to turn out their work in a timely fashion?

  7. Kathryn Smith on February 21st, 2008 5:03 pm

Yes, Karen authors are given a due date on their contract, just as the publisher promises to publish the book within a timely period. I don't know what kind of arrangement LV has with her editor or publisher, but I know that publishing dates are worked around that due date, so if you don't meet your due date, the entire schedule can be thrown off. Maybe LV has an open ended kind of agreement on this book, or maybe she's been able to reschedule with ease? I don't even want to speculate on someone else's career.

Personally (and this isn't a poke at Lisa Valdez!) I cannot stand missing due dates and have never been any later than 2-4 weeks in delivering a book. Usually a few weeks doesn't make a difference as the editor probably has other authors with the same due date, so provided they're on time, she can read them first.

I have a gut feeling she's writing all 3 remaining books -Patience, Primrose and Charlotte&John -so they can be released back to back and its taking her all this time to do it.

    Does that make sense?

  9. Sybil on February 21st, 2008 6:45 pm

I think that is a nice idea Heather. But her contract was for two books. She hasn't met that yet. So would penguin really give her another two book contract deal so they can wait on three books vs one?

    Dude I want that job.

So, by the time this book or books comes out, I will be collecting my social security check.

  12. Sybil on February 22nd, 2008 10:08 am

Well katiebabs you will have plenty of time to read it ;)

  13. Heather on February 22nd, 2008 11:25 am

Maybe she's contracted for the other 2 and hasn't told anyone or maybe I'm grasping at straws?

No, has to be that, I remember her saying in the begining on her website there were 4 books in the series.

Didn't I read somewhere she's finished patience and is working on primrose now?

Whatever, I've had it with the whole thing. She won't be getting any money from me when they do eventually come out.

  14. Gwen on February 22nd, 2008 12:04 pm

I'll read the books. I don't care when they come out. In fact, I REALLY don't care when they come out. There are plenty of other books to read that are equally as good and some even better.

What would severely bum me out is if just NO books came out.

So I'll bide my time, forget about the fact that I'm waiting, and be pleasantly surprised when they do, regardless when that is.

And I'm ignoring all the rest.

Sorry, Syb. Am I a bad duck?

  15. sharmi on February 22nd, 2008 1:20 pm

I won't lie and say I won't read it because...HELL YEAH if I see it in the stores I will pick it up. That being said, I'm really frustrated with the whole thing.

  16. Sybil on February 22nd, 2008 1:49 pm

Yes Gwen you are, but not for this... and that is why I like you ;)

  17. Karen Scott on February 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm

Can you imagine if Patience is finally released, and it sucks big time?

  18. Gwen on February 22nd, 2008 5:16 pm

    Karen - you trouble-maker you. :)

I was just on Lisa Valdez's website today & it has been updated as of this month. It says that Patience will be out April 30th, but doesn't state which year. Thought peeps might like to know, it might be getting closer.

  21. Sybil on April 15th, 2008 8:24 pm

Doesn't it state her SITE *might* be updated with news on April 30th?

I could be wrong.... but uh I go lookie although uh damn le sigh and all that... maybe later I go look though

  22. Jamie on April 16th, 2008 6:47 am

Your right Sybil, it says to check back for news on Patience April 30th. In my excitement I didn't pay attention to the little details. SOOOOO sorry peeps!!!

  23. Angela Guillaume on April 30th, 2008 3:21 pm

Just clicked on her site today and it does say that there is no release date yet, and that her editor is patiently waiting to receive her edits. So she has posted updates as promised. Still, there is no date. But who are we kidding? We're all going to be on that book when it comes out like ravished lions on fresh deer meat, if you ask me :-)

  24. Sybil on April 30th, 2008 3:29 pm

No, sorry angela. She hasn't turned in the book at all yet. So it isn't 'edits' they are waiting for. IT IS THE BOOK.

    So that Sucks muchly.

  25. Angela Guillaume on April 30th, 2008 3:44 pm

I guess I got confused as she wrote about revisions, etc...I suppose you're right. Either way, I don't think Patience will hit the shelves this May, at all. Better come to terms with it.

  26. Sybil on April 30th, 2008 3:49 pm

I never said it would be out in May of this year. YIkes. Did I? If I did it wasn't in the last year or two....

There is no way Patience will come out in May 2008. I seriously doubt it will be out in 2008 at all. I don't see her getting a window in 2009 if she keeps missing her deadlines, but there is at least hope for that there is NO WAY this book is coming out in MAY of 2008.

  27. Angela Guillaume on April 30th, 2008 4:06 pm

oh no I didn't mean to suggest you had said that. I was just "writing out loud" LOL, just musings from my mind.

  28. Jamie on April 30th, 2008 5:17 pm

One has to wonder if the book will be worth this wait of ours. If she lost her muse & that is the issue, will it live up to Passion?! Tho Angela's right, we will all be running to buy it WHEN & IF it hits the shelves.

Got something to say?
