This is the first of a much anticipated series from Cooke centered on Dragons and their mates. It’s full of fantasy, destined mates, dragon fights, and prophecies. For the first book of a series with a complex mythology, it wasn’t bad.
I liked this book well enough, I suppose. But I did have a vague sense of wanting more while I read it. I wanted more heat from the hero, Quinn, and heroine, Sara. It started out good and nicely steamy but fizzled shortly after that. It seemed like the book focused more on the mythos and less on the relationship, hence my earlier statement being a good first book for a complex world. I did want more heat between them, though.
It also seemed odd to me that Quinn, who wasn’t raised around his kind except for a brief interlude with one of the slayers, would know odd bits of lore for his kind then he’d be ignorant about other details. The good guys were all oddly ignorant about their own history. And they were all so solitary before this book. It didn’t mesh well for me or ring true, but that may be more because I need more books in the series for it to all come together.
I enjoyed reading the book. It went quickly and the fight scenes were pretty amazing. Here’s hoping Donovan’s story has the heat we know dragons are famous for.
Grade: B- (would have been a C+ except that cover is just so luscious)

In fact I like it so much and there is a part of me that is shallow I may just have to get this one for the cover alone!
I’m interested in the storyline — but yeah, I’m shallow, too 😀 I’d buy it for the cover.

The first thing I thought when I saw the cover was hubba hubba. It is gorgeous. I’ve been thinking about getting Kiss of Fire but I’ll probably wait until the second one is out. I hate starting a series less than one book in.
